THERAPEUTIC USES

Wheelchair Fencing was used following WWII in England to rehabilitate traumatic war injuries. In addition to providing a means to rework and re-establish neural pathways, retrain the eye-hand relationship and get in a a decent workout, wheelchair fencing also served to elevate one's spirit, thus leading to greater confidence and self-esteem among England's war wounded.

Likewise, today with so many traumatic war injuries returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, it seems to me that they too could benefit from both the therapeutic aspects of fencing, not to mention assisting them in regaining confidence and self-esteem to deal with life's continuing issues.

In the future I hope to share with you actual stories of people who have used wheelchair fencing for rehabilitation purposes to pursue a more active and healthy lifestyle.
